Species in The Wilderness
The species found in the Wilderness have settled there over the past 150 years, as most of the area was once seabed before being reclaimed. Despite this, a great diversity in species has been discovered—especially in the coastal areas.
In the future, it is expected that these species will spread further inland. Since the soil is former seabed, it is nutrient-poor. Combined with grazing animals, this creates ideal conditions for many rare species, including various small flowering plants and heat-loving insects.
Are you heading out to explore the Wilderness yourself? If so, you might be lucky enough to spot some of the iconic species listed below. Here, you will also find their current status on the Danish Redlist.
The Danish Red List aims to assess the risk of extinction for Danish animal, plant, and fungal species. It provides insights into biodiversity trends and serves as a foundation for prioritizing nature conservation efforts. The list is compiled according to guidelines from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
