Saksfjed Wilderness is open to the public, and we welcome visitors inside our enclosures, where oxen and horses graze year-round.
It is important that visitors follow the regulations below to ensure the well-being of nature, other visitors, and the grazing animals. This also includes any signs or instructions from the staff on site in Saksfjed Wilderness.
We hope you enjoy the Wilderness and encourage you to share your experiences—in the field or on social media. Feel free to use #SaksfjedWilderness.
General Rules
Saksfjed Wilderness belongs to its wild animals and plants.
Collecting butterflies or other insects, catching amphibians or reptiles, picking or uprooting plants, breaking or damaging branches, or cutting down bushes and trees is not allowed.
Follow the signs and instructions provided by Hempel Foundation staff or representatives.
Hempel Foundation may regulate access to the enclosures at any time, and relevant signage will be posted at gates and entrances.
Scientific equipment may be found in the area and must not be touched.
Dogs
Dogs are not allowed inside the enclosures—not even on a leash.
Dogs are permitted outside the enclosures but must always be on a leash, including in the area around Lyttesholm Nature Center.
Bicycles
Cycling inside the enclosures is prohibited.
Bicycles may only be brought inside if they are pushed, not ridden.
Access
Visitors may walk on tracks and roads within Saksfjed Wilderness from 6:00 AM until sunset.
Walking off-trail or outside marked paths, tracks, and roads is not allowed.
Inside the enclosures, access is only permitted through pedestrian gates and cattle grids. Always ensure gates close properly after passing through.
Do not open gates or vehicle access points. The fences are electrified.
Always keep a safe distance from grazing oxen and horses—at least 50 meters, and even more if they have young.
Avoid getting between cows and calves or mares and foals.
Motorized Vehicles
Motorized driving—including electric vehicles—is only allowed on the public road leading to Brunddragene.
All unauthorized motorized traffic on other roads and tracks, including forest roads, is strictly prohibited, even if chain barriers are unlocked or removed.
Feeding
Feeding the grazing oxen and horses is strictly prohibited—including treats.
Feeding alters animal behavior, making them approach humans, which can lead to them being removed or euthanised.
Only the owners of the animals are allowed to feed them.
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is not allowed in Saksfjed Wilderness.
Drones and Noise
Flying drones, using speakers, or engaging in noisy behavior is not permitted.
Camping
Camping is not allowed in Saksfjed Wilderness, including in RVs, caravans, cars, tents, hammocks, or bivouacs.
There are two shelters at Lyttesholm Nature Center, which can be rented here.
Cooking equipment and open fires are only allowed at the designated fire pit by the Nature Center’s shelters.
Waste
All waste must be taken with you.
Waste containers are available at Lyttesholm Nature Center.
Events
All events, gatherings, or activities—whether publicly advertised or not—require prior approval from the Hempel Foundation.
Permission will not be granted for sports or athletic activities.
