A Special Day for Frederik: 40 New Tauros Arrive at Saksfjed Wilderness

For Frederik, the Tauros cattle are more than just large animals roaming around Saksfjed Wilderness. As a nature manager, he is the member of staff who follows the animals closely in their daily lives and has a particular eye for how they move, what they eat, and how they help shape the landscape.

He knows the herd well and has spent the past year observing the animals up close. This has given him a unique understanding of the individual animals and of the interaction that develops between these large grazers and the nature they live in.

That is why the day when 40 new Tauros arrive from the Netherlands is also something very special.

New Animals – New Personalities

Before the trucks arrive at Saksfjed Wilderness, Frederik is excited to meet the new animals. They are not simply going to be released onto the land. They will need to find their place within an already established herd and adapt to their new surroundings.

Among the new Tauros is a nine-year-old cow who has already caught Frederik’s attention.

"A nine-year-old cow is coming – I’m going to make friends with her," he says.

It says something about the relationship that can develop between people and animals when working closely with them over a longer period of time. Frederik is not only focused on the herd as a whole, but also on the individual animals and their behaviour.

Working Close to Nature

As a nature manager at Saksfjed Wilderness, Frederik helps monitor the development of a landscape where large herbivores play an important role.

The Tauros roam freely and graze in different parts of the area. By feeding on grass, herbs and woody vegetation, they influence the vegetation and thereby help create greater variation in the landscape.

For Frederik, the work is therefore also about observation. Where do the animals move? Which areas do they seek out? What do they eat? And how does the vegetation change when large grazers are allowed to become part of the landscape?

Follow Frederik on a Very Special Day

In the film, we follow Frederik in the hours leading up to the arrival of the 40 new Tauros.

We join him as he prepares for their arrival, talks about the animals and gets ready to welcome the new members of the herd. The excitement builds as the trucks get closer.

And then comes the moment.

The doors of the transport trucks open, and the large animals run out into Saksfjed Wilderness. A new chapter begins for both the 40 Tauros and Frederik, who will now get to know the new animals and follow them as they settle into their new surroundings.

Watch the full-length film and get up close with Frederik and the new Tauros at Saksfjed Wilderness.
