Saksfjed Vildmark is open to the public – on foot and without dogs. We therefore welcome visitors into our enclosures, which are home to cows and horses that graze here all year round.
It is important that visitors follow the rules for movement and behaviour set out below, out of consideration for nature, one another and the grazing animals. This also applies to any signs displayed at any time or instructions given by staff at Saksfjed Vildmark.

Guidelines for visitors
General rules in Saksfjed Vildmark
Saksfjed Wilderness is home to wild animals and plants.
You must not collect butterflies or other insects, catch amphibians or reptiles, pick or dig up plants, or break, damage branches or fell bushes and trees.
You must, of course, follow the instructions and guidance on signs and from Hempel Foundation staff or our representatives.
The Hempel Foundation may at any time regulate access to the enclosures and will post signs to this effect on relevant gates, etc.
Scientific equipment may be installed in the areas and must not be touched.
Access and movement within the area
Walking is permitted on tracks and roads in the Saksfjed Wilderness from 6.00 am until sunset.
Walking off the beaten track, away from paths, tracks and roads, is not permitted.
If you are inside the fencing, you may only pass through swing gates and cattle grids. Always ensure that swing gates are closed behind you.
You must not open the joints or drive gates. There is a strong electric current in the fence.
Dogs are not allowed in the enclosures–not even on a lead.
Dogs are allowed outside the fences, but must always be kept on a lead. This also applies to the area around Lyttesholm Nature Centre.
Bicycles must be pushed
Cycling inside the enclosures is prohibited.
Bicycles may only be brought inside if they are pushed, not ridden.
Keep a safe distance from grazing animals
Always be mindful of grazing bulls and horses. They may be curious, but they do not approach people. If they come closer, move away.
You should always keep a good distance from grazing animals – at least 50 metres – and preferably even further if they have foals or calves. Also avoid getting between cows and calves, and mares and foals.
No feeding of cows and horses
Under no circumstances should the grazing animals be fed – not even with treats. Nor should they be lured towards you or attempts made to stroke them. This can alter the animals’ behaviour. If they become approachable, they must be removed or put down.
Only the animals’ owners are permitted to feed them. We carry out daily checks on all the animals and arrange regular veterinary inspections.

Driving is only permitted on public roads
Motorized driving—including electric vehicles—is only allowed on the public road leading to Brunddragene.
All unauthorized motorized traffic on other roads and tracks, including forest roads, is strictly prohibited, even if chain barriers are unlocked or removed.
Horse riding is not permitted
Horseback riding is not allowed in Saksfjed Wilderness.
Drones and Noise
Flying drones, using speakers, or engaging in noisy behavior is not permitted.
Camping is not permitted
You must not camp in the Saksfjed Wilderness, whether in a motorhome, caravan, car, tent, hammock or bivouac.
There are two shelters at the Nature Center, which can be booked here.
Cooking equipment and open fires are only allowed at the designated fire pit by the Nature Center’s shelters.
Waste must be taken with you
You must always take your rubbish home with you. Waste containers are available at Lyttesholm Nature Center.
Events require permission
All events, gatherings, or activities—whether publicly advertised or not—require prior approval from the Hempel Foundation.
Permission will not be granted for sports or athletic activities.

Visit the Nature Centre
At the heart of Saksfjed Wilderness lies the Nature Centre, which is run by a group of dedicated volunteers and offers visitor facilities and educational programmes.
During the Nature Centre’s opening hours, you can visit the exhibition on the area’s natural environment and learn more about the local flora and fauna. There is also an accessible toilet here.
Outside the Nature Centre’s opening hours, there is a composting toilet by the shelters, as well as a campfire site, a tap and tables and benches for free use. The shelters can be booked online here.
The packed lunch shop in the old barn is currently closed.
