The Mols Laboratory is open to the public on foot and without dogs, and we therefore invite visitors to enter our fenced areas, where cows and horses graze all year round.

It is important that visitors follow the rules for movement and behaviour set out below, out of consideration for nature, one another and the grazing animals. This also applies to any signs displayed at any time or instructions given by staff at the Mols Laboratory.

We hope you will enjoy the natural surroundings and share your experiences with others – whether out in the field or on social media. Please tag us on Instagram using @vildmarken.dk so that we can see your photos.

Guidelines for visitors

General rules at The Mols Laboratory

The Mols Laboratory is a Danish hotspot for biodiversity and research.

Wild horses and aurochs live here, and animal welfare is a top priority. It is therefore important that the animals are not fed or touched. Breaches of the rules may result in a report being made to the police.

You must not collect butterflies or other insects, catch amphibians or reptiles, pick or dig up plants, or break, damage branches or fell bushes and trees.

You must, of course, follow the instructions and guidance on signs and from Hempel Foundation staff or our representatives.

The Hempel Foundation may at any time regulate access to the fenced-off area and will display signs to this effect on relevant gates, etc.

Scientific equipment may be installed in the areas and must not be touched.

Access and traffic

Walking is permitted on tracks and roads within the Mols Laboratory from sunrise until sunset.

Walking off the beaten track, away from paths, tracks and roads, is not permitted.

If you are inside the fencing, you may only pass through swing gates and cattle grids. Always ensure that swing gates are closed behind you.

You must not open the joints or drive gates. There is a strong electric current in the fence.

Feeding is prohibited

Horses and cattle must not be fed – not even with treats. This can alter the animals’ behaviour, causing them to become aggressive, and they may then have to be removed or put down.

Keep your distance from horses and oxen

You must always keep a safe distance from grazing animals – at least 50 metres – and preferably even further if they have foals or calves. Also avoid getting between cows and calves, as well as mares and foals.

The animals are checked daily. Read more about how we manage our grazing cows and horses here.

If you encounter any problems, please contact: +45 21 53 09 13

Horse riding is not permitted

Horse riding is not permitted at the Mols Laboratory.

Bicycles are allowed, but...

Cycling is permitted on the grounds, but please be considerate of animals and visitors.

Dogs must always be kept on a short lead

We recommend that you do not bring dogs into the enclosure. Dogs must always be kept on a short lead.

Drones and other noise

Flying drones, using loudspeakers and making a lot of noise, etc., are not permitted.

Camping and open fires are not permitted

You must not camp inside the fenced area – whether in a tent, a hammock or a bivouac. It is strictly forbidden to light fires on the site.

Always take your rubbish home with you

Rubbish must, of course, always be taken away with you. There are rubbish bins by the car park.

CCTV surveillance in the area

There may be wildlife cameras set up in various places around the Mols Laboratory.
